We address the gaps in the Indian higher education system concerning;

  • Curricular Irrelevance
  • Graduate Unemployability

Railway Children India is a national-level child rights organisation striving to create a “world where no child ever has to live on the streets”. Railway Children was founded in the UK and has been working in India since 1996. To become a resilient organization and build our capacity to scale the impact of our work in India, Railway Children India was registered as a Section 8 not-for-profit company in November 2013.

In India, every five minutes a child arrives alone at a railway station. Immediately they face violence, exploitation, trafficking and abuse. Scavenging for scraps of food they are beaten, attacked, raped and even killed. These children often then have significant developmental delays and attachment disorders that can manifest in a range of challenging behaviours; often anxious and distressed or angry. Many have become reliant on substance abuse as an escape. By the time we start working with these children, their lives have already been typified by rejection, neglect, judgement and apathy from the adults around them. Reaching out to these children as early as possible while they are on a moving train or after they arrive at a railway station is important for their protection, restoration and rehabilitation. We aim to prevent children from slipping into street life and suffering all of the further harm and abuse we know that this can bring in their life.

RCI currently works at 9 railway stations and 10 slum communities across 7 states protecting 7000 children annually with 90% reuniting with their families. RCI is a resource agency for Indian Railways to train and sensitize their personnel on child protection across the nation. Our work for more than 25 years has been focused on creating child-friendly railway stations, strengthening families and communities, and sensitizing the Indian Railway ecosystem.
